Obituary for Irvin Robert "Bobby" Schaeffer
Irvin Robert Schaeffer, "Bobby", 85, of Shoemakersville, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2017 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Twp. He was the husband of Geraldine R. (Shellhammer) Schaeffer. They were married on July 5, 1958 and celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage.
Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Harold I. Schaeffer and Orpha (King) Klemmer. Bobby was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, receiving the Bronze Star. Prior to enlisting in the Army, he was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard in Hamburg. Bobby worked for thirty-five years as a truck driver for Red Star Express until retiring in 1999. He received a plaque for one million miles of safe driving. Bobby was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Leesport and also the American Legion Post #732 Bernville. He was an avid race car fan.
Surviving in addition to his wife Geraldine is one sister: Shirley, wife of Lewis Carr, Sinking Spring; and several nieces and nephews. Bobby will be missed by his faithful companion and best friend: Bridgette. He was predeceased by a brother: Herbert H. Schaeffer; and a sister: June Becker.
Services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. Burial will follow in Berks County Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Thursday 10:00 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Animal Rescue League, P.O. Box 69, Mohnton, PA 19540.
