Obituary for Esther L. Peters

Esther Louise (Kershner) Peters, 99, of Shoemakersville, passed away on September 6, 2017. She was the loving wife of Sherwood W. Peters Sr., who died February 16, 1993.

Born in Tilden Township at the Bockmoal near Bern, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Katie (Kauffman) Kershner. Esther attended Fisher School at Bern and later the consolidated school at West Hamburg. She graduated from Hamburg High School in 1936 and Kutztown State Teachers’ College in 1938. She was a long time elementary school teacher at Perry Elementary School in the Hamburg Area School District, and taught at Center Township Consolidated School, Tilden Elementary School, Centerport Elementary School, and MCAS Cherry Point Station Nursery School, North Carolina. She was a member of Zion's Church, Windsor Castle, where she was a member of the Prime Timers group. Esther was also a member of the local Retired Teacher's Association and enjoyed quilting.

Esther is survived by two daughters, Suzanne L. (Peters) Domalakes, wife of John Domalakes, Frackville; and Cynthia E. (Peters) Paris, wife of Dominic A. Paris, Midlothian, VA; and two sons, Sherwood W. Peters, Jr., husband to Alison P. Peters, Mount Lebanon; and Steven R. Peters, husband to Patricia A. Peters, Alexandria, VA; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Mary Ellen Fraunfelter, widow of Clyde, Chambersburg PA; Elizabeth Larson, wife of Howard, Columbia; and Janet Barclay, wife of Andrew, Cary NC; and one brother Clyde Kershner, and his wife Sharon, Shartelsville. Esther was predeceased by siblings: George Kershner, Jr.; William Kershner; Rachel Kline; Anna Foglio; and Martha Kelly.

Services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am from Zion's Church, 770 Zion's Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. Burial will follow in Zion's Cemetery, Perry Twp. A viewing will be held in Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg on Sunday 7:00 to 9:00 pm and at the church Monday 10:00 to 11:00 am.
